Epilepsy Facts:

Epilepsy affects over 3 million Americans of all ages – MORE than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease combined.

  • Almost 500 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed every day in the United States. Epilepsy affects 50,000,000 people worldwide.
  • In two-thirds of patients diagnosed with epilepsy, the cause is unknown.
  • Epilepsy can develop at any age and can be a result of genetics, stroke, head injury, and many other factors.
  • In over thirty percent of patients, seizures cannot be controlled with treatment. Uncontrolled seizures may lead to brain damage and death. Many more have only partial control of their seizures.
  • It is estimated that up to 50,000 deaths occur annually in the U.S. from status epilepticus (prolonged seizures), Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), and other seizure-related causes such as drowning and other accidents.
  • Historically, epilepsy research has been under-funded. Federal dollars spent on research pale in comparison to those spent on other diseases, many of which affect fewer people than epilepsy.

Friends and Supporters -

All we can say is "THANK YOU!".  On the eve of our Celebration Fundraiser at EJs Pizza we are truly in awe of the impact Team Ryan's Lions will have on our joint benefiiciaries:  the Houston Epilepsy Foundation and the IDEA League.

With the monies we've collectively raised both organizations will be in a better position to offer services to those who seek their help.

We in turn are strengthened by your support and our shared commitment to finding a cure for this terrible disease.

But for now... let's all take a bow and raise a glass (or a slice of pizza) and take pride in how a little group of friends and family have rallied so much support in honor of one AMAZING little boy!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Nina, Jeff, Jacob and RYAN!

Friends and Supporters -

All we can say is WOW!  Thank you so much to all our locals who came out to D'Vine Wine Bar earlier this week to raise a glass for a good cause.

I spent all week stressing about whether the event would be a success or not and the evening exceeded my expectations.
We were able to raise OVER $1500 and couldn't have done it without you, our supporters and friends, or without those who donated their products and services to our silent auction.

We are getting closer to hitting our fundraising goal -- every bit helps.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Nina, Jeff, Jacob and RYAN!

Friends and Family -

Team "Ryan's Lions" is ROARING back into action for 2010 benefiting the Houston Epilepsy Foundation and the IDEA League.  We aim to hold our status as the #1 Family Fundraising Team and have two goals this year:

1)  Grow our fundraising total from the walk and our other community outreach events to $10,000
2)  Have 100 participants at the April 17th Spring Stroll for Epilepsy.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Ryan's Lions -- it is our family's effort to raise awareness for epilepsy and money to fund programs and services to support families dealing with seizures.  In particular, we are focused on sodium channel epilepsies.  We do this to honor our young son, Ryan, who was diagnosed with a seizure disorder prior to turning one year old.

We are also hoping to have additional awareness nights and activities local to the Cypress, TX area.  Please stay tuned for more
information.

As always, you can learn more about
Ryan's story, his condition, and see our answers to your questions.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Nina, Jeff, Jacob and...  RYAN!
